Hopkins employees using enterprise applications may receive email using an address listed as their JHED ID (LID) followed by @johnshopkins.edu. In other situations, outside people may receive email containing a system-generated “from” address that matches this syntax. LID@johnshopkins.edu is a new email address used by systems within Hopkins to deliver email to internal Hopkins email accounts. It does not interfere with any other email addresses you use, and there is no need to begin using it for normal email correspondence, or to publicize it to others. This address was created as part of an effort to ensure important Hopkins communications reach email accounts that exist on Hopkins email servers. This reduces the exposure to email-based security issues and provides Hopkins IT administrators with a mechanism to troubleshoot email delivery problems. The most important thing to remember about this email address is that it shouldn’t impact anything you are currently doing. It is useful because it removes some of the complexity with the email environment at Hopkins. Not everyone employed or affiliated with Hopkins has a LID@johnshopkins.edu email address. If you want to obtain an email account at Johns Hopkins, please send an email to support@jhu.edu and request a JHEM email account. There are many email systems within Hopkins from which the LID@johnshopkins.edu is developed. These email systems send data files to the JHED directory which produces a specific value based on the email system you use. Examples of these email systems are: GroupWise, JHEM, Exchange, Basic Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, etc. In some cases, people have email accounts on more than one email system. In these situations, GroupWise and JHEM normally take precedence over other internally systems simply because they are the largest. If you have an email account on more than one email system, and you appear to be missing email messages, please login to the other account and look for the message. A simple forward rule can be established to send email to a preferred email account. If your email system contains only a small number of email accounts, it may not be participating in email address exchange for LID@johnshopkins.edu .
